Dragon

“Dragon Lady” was designed for the “Sulky Threads Challenge” 2003, and won first place. What's unusual about the “Lady” is that her scaly skin and wings are made entirely of rayon and metallic thread. (Sulky thread, of course.)

The body of “Dragon Lady” is made of doesuede fabric. Over that are hundreds of oval-shaped scales that are free-motion embroidered onto small pieces of cotton. These embroidered pieces are applied to the “Dragon's” body to make the skin. The chest scales are individually embroidered, and sewn on separately.

“Dragon Lady's” wings and “ears” are free-motion embroidery over a washable stabilizer. After the embroidery is finished, the stabilizer is washed away, leaving only the threads. The wings are sewn onto a wire frame, covered in hand painted metallic knit fabric.

“Dragon Lady” crouches on a rock made of Styrofoam, covered in knit fabric, embroidered with rayon thread.

“Dragon Lady” is currently on tour with the “Sulky in America” display, seen at major fabric and quilt conventions across the United States.
