Topaz
“Topaz” was designed for another Gypsy Challenge: “Jewel of the Gypsy” 2003, and won first place. She is the spirit of the fiery topaz gem, rising above a flaming volcano.
“Topaz” is an all-cloth doll. The body is made of a hand-dyed metallic and cotton fabric, and wrapped in metallic threads. The costume is made of hand-painted silk chiffon and beaded satins. The headpiece, belt, and accessories are made from various pieces of antique brooches, bracelets, earrings, and gemstones.
“Topaz” hovers over a stand made of paper mache, encrusted with gems and mirrors. Using tiny lights and a miniature fan in the base makes the chiffon flames “burn” from below. They run on a battery pack, all built into the stand. The doll is 18 in. tall, and the whole piece stands 22 inches.
